I've researched more on the case in WI where the midwife is going on trial for reckless endangerment and the practice of medicine. Apparently, this is helping the certified professional midwives (CPM's, non-nurse midwives) get legislation past that will make them legal in the state and help parents under stand the difference between CPMs and lay midwives. (YES! Let's stop lumping them together!) Apparently the midwife did not have credentials that were at the CPM level (a.k.a. "lay"?!?!) and the mom had had 3 prior Cesareans.
I personally think there may be a role for renegade midwives who do what no one else will attmept. But I think parents NEED to be informed that that's what they are choosing (not just a lump of the term "midwives"). We need guidelines where we can work together as CPMs or CNM's (nurse midwives)in the medical and state community.
I do not mean to imply I have all the facts...these are just some of my thoughts on what I've read published with my short career as a midwife
