Today is my parent's 30th anniversary. (My contribution was writing on the windows of their car) I told my dad about my micro profs tangent about female microbiologists today. She was pretty balanced and informative, but went on about how wonderful it was that this one lady went against her family and went to college. She worked 7 days a week in her lab and frequently spent the night there. Science became her life and she had the "intuition" to not get married or have kids. (that being my prof's quote) My teacher was obviously impressed that she knew science would be more important than getting caught up in a family.
At 8 whatever in the morning no one in class seemed that impressed. We're a bit grumpy sometimes just having to come to a 6 week summer class! I don't think anyone's looking forward to a life chained to a lab. I would have expected my dad to agree with my sentiments and shake his head. Instead he said,
"Well, what if she asked you if you were married...(then impersonating me) 'Nooo'.
"And are you getting married in the near future...(impersonation of me again) 'nooo'.
Ok, point taken, bubble burst...I'll go see about getting rid of that plank in my own eye.
